Birthday: July 20, 1966
Years running: Off and on since “back in the day” when I was in school. Track and Cross Country in HS. I switched to mostly beer in college with an occasional run and even one very under-trained marathon. Since the 2003 Houston marathon I have been running regularly. So as of 2007 – 4 plus years along with my early years of spotty running.
Occupation: Attorney
How many miles a week do you run? 35 – 70 depending on what the goal is.
How did you come to join Bayou City?: I was training on my own for Houston in 2003 when my friend qualified for Boston in the Chicago marathon. I wanted to be able to go as well, so I needed more motivation. I met Bonnie Jo at the marathon signup party and she is a convincing lady. Plus, the website was cool and mentioned drinking beer several times.
My proudest running accomplishment is: Either qualifying for Boston (I was very unsure as to what I could run) or a sub 3 marathon. Too close to call.
My favorite training run is: Runs on vacation. Anyone remember the vertical ascent in New Mexico? A trail on a mountain with Katrina, Tom and Kent with the conversation going something like this - Katrina: speaking in a chipper conversational tone – “Oh, it should be just a little farther. We are near the top and the other side of the mountain will be nicer.” Scott & Tom: barely speaking through huffs and puffs – “I - can’t – go – any – farther – or – any - higher. Hey, where is Kent? He turned around? Kent is a @#$%ing genius!!”
My favorite race is: I really like the Boston Marathon so I’ll pick that one today.
My best distance is: I guess the best race I have run lately is a half marathon.
I run because: I like being in shape and having some goals to work towards. I like the people – runners just seem to be good people.
My philosophy for life is: Try to be part of the solution. Or, plan for the future; live in the present; and, learn from the past.
My next goal is: I don’t know. Sub 5 mile? 38 minute 10K? 18 minute 5K? Run again tomorrow?
Favorite training food: I have different cravings. Potatoes, pasta, pizza, burgers, humus, salads, steaks, Mexican, sandwiches, bbq, and the list goes on and on. Oh, I like food, beer and wine in case that has not become obvious.
When I'm running I think about: Running. Seriously, it totally depends on life at the time.
The best running advice I could give would be: Enjoy it or do something else.
People would be surprised if they knew I: am an Aggie lawyer born in Alabama. Wait, that would probably be no surprise at all.
The top thing on my dream list: A well lived life.
If I could have been anything, besides my current occupation it would be: A recreationist or a word maker-upper.
I would love to spend the day with: An interesting person. My dog Norman and my S.O. Becki. My parents. My sister. My friends. Boring, but true.
Other hobbies besides running: Hiking, dogs, golf, reading, conversations, and all that jazz.
The most embarrassing thing that has happened to me is: Who knows? I am sure the list is long. Maybe not the top one, but one that makes the list: showing up for the wrong final exam my first semester in college after pulling an “all nighter” studying for the wrong exam. I then had to run all the way across campus once I found out which class I should have studied for (all of this part is true). Also, I was naked (not true).
The most profound thing that has happened in my life: Love, death and the death of loved ones.
