---- HAROLD KAUFMAN ----

Name: Harold Kaufman

Age: 70 ( as of 1-18-01 )

Years running: About 35 years, including some when I was in college.

Occupation: Retired Chemical Engineer.

How many miles a week do you run? 34 miles per week. I have logged over 50,000 miles since I started logging in 1968.

How did you come to join Bayou City?: I started when we were a group of Texaco runners organized by Ray Hodges, then we added other runners and chose the name Bayou City Road Runners.

My proudest running accomplishment is: Running the Boston Marathon in 3 hours and 21 minutes official time.

My favorite training run is: Memorial Park, including the loop.

My favorite race is: The Tomball Run. (I'm sorry it will no longer be held.)

My best distance is: 10k.

I run because: I am trying to stay healthy and fit.

My philosophy for life is: God gives us our abilities, and it's our responsibility to use those abilities appropriately.

My next goal is: To keep running as much as time and health will permit.

Favorite training food: Power Bars.

When I'm running I think about: If running alone, I pray and plan what I'm going to do when I am not running.

The best running advice I could give would be: To avoid injury and to maintain pace in a race, use the counting (to yourself) method, like a mantra. For an aching leg or foot, etc. count on the footstrike of the non-aching foot, but not more than about 50 footstrikes (or you may overuse the non-aching foot). If that doesn't help, slow down or stop running to avoid serious injury. For maintaining a pace in a race, especially near the end of the race, count on alternate footstrikes, or use a phrase like "as the run gets longer, my legs get stronger" to focus on the positive. You can also keep a pace by saying to yourself "6 minute mile" or whatever time you want to focus on and maintain as a pace.

People would be surprised if they knew I: Feel like I'm 35 years old when I run.

The top thing on my dream list is: Run a 4 minute mile when I'm 80 years old (remember this is a dream list).

If I could have been anything, besides my current occupation it would be: A professional runner.

Other hobbies besides running: Bicycling.

I would love to spend the day with: Albert Einstein. This has nothing to do with running, but I am still trying to more fully understand his theories of relativity.

The most embarrasing thing that has happened to me is: Getting sick at mile 13 of the Houston Marathon. Fortunately, I made it to a Port-A-Can and then finished the marathon.

The most profound thing that has happened in my life is: Too complicated to describe in a running questionare.
