Age: 44 on 4/21/2002
Years running: 20
Occupation: Marketing and Strategic Planning
How many miles a week do you run? 20-30 when not training for a marathon; up to 50 when marathon training
How did you come to join Bayou City?: I moved here in late 1998 and found the web-site. My first run with BCRR was Easter 1999. In those days, there was an 8:30 AM Sunday run
My proudest running accomplishment is: Qualifying for and then running the 2001 Boston marathon
My favorite training run is: Allen Parkway- I like the variety of terrain. There are some parts of the trail where it is hard to believe you are a few blocks downtown of the fourth largest city in the country. In previous places I lived my favorite training runs were: Sands Point, Long Island, NY (a run through old estates and along the water on the Northshore of Long Island), The Chicago Lakefront (20 miles of running paths), Forest Park, St. Louis (a 10K running path through one of the largest urban parks in the US), Shunga Trail, Topeka, Kansas (several miles of running paths along Shunganunga Creek in my hometown)
My favorite race is: Favorite local race is Huntsville Half marathon. I also like the Crescent City Classic in New Orleans and the NY Marathon. Other favorite races in places I used to live in include: Chicago Distance Classic (20K) in Chicago, Cow Harbor 10K in Northport, L.I., NY, Shelter Island 10K in New York, Bix 7M in Davenport, Iowa and St. Patrick's Day 5M in St.Louis. By the way, the Garden of the Gods 10M was awesome!!
My best distance is: 10 miles to 25K
I run because: I like it for many reasons. There are the physical benefits of strengthening the cardi-vascular system. It is also a stress reliever for me. I am able to sort out alot of things when I run. If I go several days without running I get cranky and irritable. Finally, running gets my competitive juices flowing.
My philosophy for life is: Treat people the way you want to be treated, but don't underestimate yourself.
My next goal is: Setting a new PR in the marathon
Favorite training food: Pad Thai at the Thai Spice
When I'm running I think about: a lot of things. I often hear songs going through my head. Sometimes I am intensely focused on my running- it's almost as if a voice in my head is coaching me and encouraging me. And then there are times when I am not focused and random thoughts come into my head: "It's so hot!", "I can't wait to get to Valhalla", "Are they ever going to finish that house in River Oaks?", "Why is Rob running so fast?", "Remember to bring those charts to tomorrow's meeting" . . .
The best running advice I could give would be: enjoy it, go at your own pace and don't get caught up in what other people are doing and by all means, don't try to replicate Mark Fraser's training schedule!!!
People would be surprised if they knew I: used to live in Houston through most of the "Boom, then Bust" 1980s. My first marathon was the 1987 Houston Tenneco Marathon. Believe it or not, the weather was cold and damp- 38°F, strong winds out of the north- the best weather of any of the Houston marathons I've run.
The top thing on my dream list: changes from day to day
If I could have been anything, besides my current occupation it would be: something related to teaching
Other hobbies besides running: Most outdoor activities, travelling. I also enjoy reading and learning about history
I would love to spend the day with: my family. I don't get to spend as much time with them as I would like.
The most embarrassing thing that has happened to me is: too numerous to mention. I will say this, "Altitude Anonymous was nothing!"
The most profound thing that has happened in my life: probably has not happened yet
